We're now equidistant between two landmark moments in European payments legislation. PSD2 was due to be transposed into national law in all member states from January this year, while regulatory technical standards on strong authentication take effect across the EU in September next year.

Many issues remain outstanding. Expert speakers from the banking, fintech and legal sectors singled out fragmentation at the national level, questions over the role of GDPR and ongoing uncertainty over authentication. One thing remains clear: time is tight, and it's looking more and more unlikely every hurdle will be overcome by September 2019.
