On October 25, 2018, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) announced its decision to impose a monetary penalty on Facebook amounting to £500,000 due to the company’s failure to protect its users’ personal information during a serious data incident.
The present penalty notice follows a previous notice of intent (NOI) that the ICO served to Facebook in June 2018 in relation to this fine. The incident took place between 2007 and 2014, and it resulted in the harvesting of Facebook data belonging to up to 87m people worldwide, out of whom at least 1m were UK Facebook users.
