UK: ICO Fines TalkTalk Telecom Group for Failing to Look After Customer Data

On August 10, 2017 the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) announced that it had fined TalkTalk Telecom Group PLC £100,000 for breaches of the Data Protection Act, including for failing to take appropriate measures for safe storage of customers’ data.

During the investigation, the ICO ascertained that the issue was with a TalkTalk portal through which customer data could be accessed. "One of the other companies with access to the portal was Wipro, a multinational IT services company in India that resolved high level complaints and addressed network coverage problems on TalkTalk’s behalf."
