UK: Guidance Explaining Rules on Payment Surcharges

On December 1, 2017, the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy published a paper for businesses titled “The Consumer Rights (Payment Surcharges) Regulations 2012 Guidance”, providing guidance on the regulations as amended by paragraph 12 of Schedule 8 to the Payment Services Regulations 2017, with effect from January 13, 2018.

The aim of the guidelines, which are not legally binding, is to provide updated guidance on the new rules included in the regulations prohibiting traders from levelling a surcharge in relation to a wide variety of transactions.
