On October 26, 2018, Sveriges Riksbank, the central bank of Sweden, released a second report called "The Riksbank’s e-krona project", in which it analyses what the Riksbank’s role should be in an ever-evolving payments landscape, whether the bank should issue an e-krona alongside cash and, if so, what direction this should take.
According to the report, Sweden is almost a cashless economy, as it is estimated that in the future cash will be used in scarcity, as electronic payments are taking over rapidly. Many central banks around the globe have already started exploring the possibility of issuing central bank digital currencies (CBDC).
