Mastercard to Remove Obligation for Signatures at Global Level

On October 18, 2018, Mastercard released an announcement heralding the end of signatures on the back of payment cards across the globe. As from this day, it will be the cardholders' choice if they want to put their signature both on their cards and on in-store receipts.

Mastercard’s initiative is aligned with the results of a survey investigating US consumers’ behaviour, by means of which it was evidenced that only 40 percent had actually signed the back of their cards and 50 percent of the survey's participants were of the opinion that signing the card did not offer them more security. At the same time, the majority of respondents "wanted biometrics to replace signatures, passwords and PIN codes when paying with their card".
