On April 3, 2019, in an announcement dated March 29, 2019, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced that Payments Japan has been advancing in discussions on creating a unified standard for QR codes and barcodes in payments.
This follows earlier discussions that the METI held in April 2018 to identify challenges in relation to promoting cashless settlement and future directions, which led to the recommendations being presented as the “Cashless Vision”. In response, Payments Japan has issued guidelines to standardise QR payments.
