Germany: Federal Government Responds to Questions on Cryptocurrencies and ICOs

On January 18, 2019, the German parliament (Bundestag) released the responses of the federal government to a series of questions submitted by a parliamentary group in December 2018 related to the standards and legal classification of cryptocurrencies and initial coin offerings (ICOs) in the country.

The ten questions were submitted in furtherance of an interview given by Felix Hufeld, the president of BaFin, and the answers seek to clarify the following, among other things:
