European Payments Council Publishes White Paper on Non-NFC Based Mobile SEPA Card Proximity Payments

On June 7, 2019, the European Payments Council (EPC) released a white paper on Version 1.0 of the non-near field communication (NFC) based mobile SEPA card proximity payments (MCPPs), which aims to increase awareness on such mobile card payments solutions and to help overcome the lack of accessibility to the NFC antenna on some mobile operating systems.

The white paper recognises that non-NFC proximity technologies, such as QR codes and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), have the ability to boost consumers’ experience and bring more functionality and more services to customers. However, the EPC also notes that the level of maturity of such technologies for mobile payments is not yet at its peak.
