European Council Adopts Directive on Measures to Facilitate Access by Competent Authorities to Financial Information

The European Council has adopted a directive that provides measures to facilitate competent authorities' use of financial and other information for the prevention, detection, investigation or prosecution of certain criminal offences.

The European Commission proposed the new rules in April 2018, arguing that the financial activities of criminal groups and terrorists may leave an information trail that could be crucial for investigators and the current regulation lacked provisions for this information to be accessed.
