Europe: Proposal for Regulation on Privacy and Electronic Communications

The Digital Single Market Strategy of the European Commission has published a proposed Regulation on Privacy and Electronic Communications, repealing Directive 2002/58/EC (Regulation on Privacy and Electronic Communications) and including new provisions for better protection of personal data in electronic communications, to increase trust and protect people's private life and open up new opportunities for business.

After a number of consultations with industry, national public authorities, civil society organisations, experts such as the European data protection supervisors and the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC), the European Commission came to the conclusion to propose new rules.
