On October 8, 2019, the European Council adopted new rules on whistle-blower protection (Directive 2018/0106 on the protection of persons who report breaches of union law). The new rules establish safeguards to protect whistle-blowers from retaliation and includes a series of support measures.
The new legislation requires the creation of safe channels for reporting purposes within an organisation, whether public or private, and requires national authorities to ensure citizens are adequately informed.
