Blocking Russia from making international payments could disrupt the entire economic system, damage "the lifeblood of business" and potentially drag Europe back into financial crisis, economics experts have warned.
The UK government is in talks with the European Union (EU) over stopping Russia from using the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) payments system.
It has made the move in an attempt to ratchet up sanctions on Russia in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
