Optimal Payments said customer data has been compromised as it investigates what could potentially be a much bigger breach, triggering a big drop in share price of the newly FTSE250 listed company.
The alleged hack relates to historical customers of the recently-acquired Moneybookers business and Neteller, its popular gambling payment processor service.
In a statement yesterday the company acknowledged two data breaches which occurred between 2009 and 2010.
It said both were reported to the regulatory authorities at the time.
