Research by consultancy giant McKinsey has suggested the pressure on payments firms to achieve scale has driven a recent wave of consolidation, but said that commercial drivers are running up against a multi-speed market and regulatory pressures.
Since January 2018, there has been merger and acquisition activity worth more than $100bn in the payments sector, with consolidation driven by factors including geographic expansion and the need to scale up operations.
