U.S. Wire Act Opinion Clouds European Expansion Plans

A new U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) opinion on the Wire Act adds “a lot more confusion” for online gambling dealmakers and European companies eager to expand into the U.S. market, experts have said.

The DOJ opinion issued this week advises that the 1961 Wire Act bans not only interstate transmissions of sports bets but also online casino and lottery games, overturning the prior 2011 opinion that led to New Jersey, Pennsylvania and other states regulating online gambling.
