U.S. Playing 'Catch-Up' On Data Protection Standards

U.S. data protection laws should take their cue from European regulations, industry experts said at a recent hearing in Congress.

Called to examine the state of U.S. data security and breach notification regulations, the panel of witnesses raised concerns about the existing “hodge-podge” of state and sectoral regulations that currently govern the area.

All agreed that U.S. law required reform to handle developments in cybersecurity and data handling adequately, but disagreements arose over issues of liability and the time frame in which notification of breaches must occur.
