European police have carried out the continent’s largest ever seizure of virtual currency, confiscating various tokens worth more than €4.5m that had been used to launder the proceeds of illicit drug sales on the dark web.
Europol announced on Thursday that two laboratories for producing synthetic drugs, in Granada and Valencia, were raided by law enforcement authorities from Spain and Austria.
According to Spanish police, the drug distributors offered payment through online payment platforms “such as Paypal, Payward or Payvision”.
