The European Commission has announced the creation of a blockchain observatory, fuelling speculation of the arrival of more extensive regulation in the area this year.
Launched on Thursday, the EU Blockchain Observatory and Forum was conceived as a means of promoting the use of the technology in Europe, as well as providing a central locale for its study.
“I see blockchain as a game changer and I want Europe to be at the forefront of it development,” said Mariya Gabriel, commissioner for digital economy and society.
“We need to establish the right enabling environment — a Digital Single Market for blockchain so that all citizens can benefit, instead of a patchwork of initiatives.
