Kenya's M-Pesa 'Effectively Banned' From Gambling Transactions

Kenya’s gambling regulator has ordered Safaricom, the telecoms firm that operates mobile money giant M-Pesa, to suspend the modes of transactions frequently used by a list of 25 gambling operators.

Liti Wambua, director of the Betting Control and Licensing Board, sent a letter to Safaricom’s legal department demanding that the company “suspend their paybills and short codes until advised otherwise”.

Wambua stated that the operators in question would not have their licences renewed until they met their “outstanding renewal requirements” and have passed ongoing “due diligence”.
