India Consults On Fresh Approach To Payment Systems Amid Competition Concerns

India’s central bank has opened a debate on the state of competition within the payments infrastructure market, setting out arguments around greater participation in the country’s central settlement and clearing entities.

Following last year’s statement of intent to “encourage more players to participate in and promote pan-Indian payment platforms”, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is consulting until February 20 on whether a fresh approach to payment system-level competition is needed.
