Hackers ‘Guessed’ Visa Card Data In Tesco Hack, Research Says

A “frightfully easy” cyber-attack that exploits flaws in Visa’s card system was potentially used to defraud Tesco Bank customers of millions of pounds last month, according to a team of academics — potentially weakening the card giant’s arguments against EU-wide security standards.

In an academic paper published in the IEEE Security & Privacy journal, researchers from Newcastle University claimed that hackers can take just six seconds to find a card number, its expiry date and its CVV code through pure guesswork.
